Yesterday (15th June 2009) Gala bingo announced that due to recent tax increase they are now considering closing at least 6 of their 156 clubs with the loss of 180 jobs. Gala which is backed by private equity companies Permira, Candover and Cinven recently announced that there will be no more redundancies after streamlining in November after letting 200 of their staff go.

Since, the No Smoking ban, plus the resent raise in duty, it is thought that Gala may also consider selling a further 40 – 50 clubs, many of these being old cinemas, which will allow the company to concentrate on the new purpose built flat-floor buildings. Gala Coral, which own the Coral bookmakers, now employ 19,000 people across the group saw their earnings fall 10% to £362 million in the year to September last.

In other news yet another bingo hall may have to close down due to the raise in duty. Mr Simon Hannah the CE of the Riva Bingo hall in Bristol says “The raise in duty was the final nail in the coffin”. The management are talking with staff to try and find a solution to get more people through the door.

Now, eventually, for some good news it was all smiles for one lucky woman at Paddy Power Bingo who scooped over £17,000 playing 90 ball bingo, and username Petelilly couldn’t believe his luck when he played Foxy Bingo and won a massive £25,000 in the monthly big play. Petelilly has been a member of Foxy bingo for about 6 months had to call his son to check his account which had £25,000 in it. Congratulations to all the winners of online and land based bingo.
